I watch Norm Abrams make kewl stuff on the teevee. Stuff anyone can make in their own wood shop, with several hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment.

I bought some wood and began working on a kneeler for my mother as a Christmas present... apparently, I haven't finished it ...it's in my garage collecting dust half way done....this post reminded me... thanks. I think i'll go home and work on it now ;;)
p.s.
Altar sounds great! Make sure to post pics of it on here so all us fishies can seeeee!
It maybe ambitious, but I was going to try for one of those altars with the kneeler that folds up into the altar that I have seen a couple of people on here post. Since I live in an apartment I think that would be ideal to save space. Yes that would save plenty of space... do you have an outline on how you are going to do it? I just studies things, put them apart and together, take pictures of it, and then go home and make it! See if you can go to a church and check out the different kneelers they have with the side rotaters (haha! I don't know what else they are called! ) let me knwo your plan, so i can copy you! I need this done before Christmas!!! and I want to make one for myself too! ;) No plans, though one of these workbooks I picked up yesterday shows how to do drawing and measurements on the fly. I can't draw to save my life. So hopefully this will have some good tips. It is called Designing Furniture from Taunton. Also I lack certain tools that make life easier like a table saw or router, but living in an apartment makes those items unattainable.

Try this link: http://www.bearswoodshop.com/ Use the sidebar and click "unfinished kneelers." He does all the cutting. You assemble, sand, and finish. Thanks for the link. Actually, I just like making stuff, especially with my hands. So why am I in college? Isn't this gonna just land me in some crappy desk job....

I do all sorts of carpentry: framing, trim, finish, cabinetry and furniture. I recently built my wife an amoire, and have constructed much of the furniture in our home. I have also installed wood flooring.
I particularly enjoy hand dovetail joinery . I also whittle a lot and make wood toys and duck decoys, as well as making rifle and shotgun stocks out of various blanks.

You can have the wood cut at a lowes or Home depo store to your requested measurements. Also, nails and wood glue are small and easy. you can stick with those plain and simple tools! They work....what kind of tools DO you have? A drill ? Screws work better in the wood, the thread will keep them in well PLUS wood glue inside... Oh, I have drills. I just needed a Miter Saw to cut the wood. Its just that to get really nice crafty looking stuff usually requires more specialized tools, especially to cover up lack of talent ;D.

I took a picture from the Internet of a fixed kneeler and built it from scratch with padded kneeler board and all. I didn't use plans and just worked it all out in my head as far as measurements go. My grandpa has a workshop and I used his tools so I couldn't do it again, at least not right away. I did enjoy building it. The wood I used was ash and I used a varathane finish. The padding on the kneeler board is blue vinyl pulled tight over 3" foam rubber and stapled to the bottom. It looks nice, I'll have to get a picture some day to put on here. Unfortunately it is in storage in North Carolina.
