Does anybody have advice on buying used guns? From Pawn Shops or Individuals for example. I'm a little poor and looking over these new prices is hard to swallow at times.

Almost all of my guns are used and I have never really had a bad experience. However, not all routes are equal. Going through individuals can be a little dangerous. I don't have any experience with Pawn shops, but gun shops are usually decent and forthright with their selection, but they usually mark their prices higher than MSRP (they have families to feed too). Inspections on purchased guns should usually follow the same format for doctor visits: second opinions, second opinions.

Personally, I think the best route to take with used/pre-owned guns, IMHO, is through www.gunbroker.com. Essentially, it's an auction site for guns that has always proven very reliable for me and is a mainstay of the majority of gun dealers and collectors. Every seller has a rating and profile where people who have dealt with said seller can comment on their experience with him and give an appropriate rating (A+, A, B+, etc.). You simply bid (and win) on a given item, you communicate your local FFL holder's information, he ships it (shipping price is usually stated in the product description) and you pick it up. There's always an inspection period, however, the window of time varies.

All in all, I have used this site for the majority of my purchases and have never had a negative experience. Hope this helps ...  Tip o' the hat

I saw a few news articles that the M4 carbines jammed during the recent big fire fight in Afghanistan.  One soldier said it was after firing through 12 mags.  So that is either 240 or 360 rounds, give or take.  That's a lot of rounds if fired off real quick, but I would expect better.  Maybe it was "spray and pray" time.

Maybe it is time for the army to go to the new HK .223?

Yep.  That's on my wish list, though I already have an arsenal.  Any idea on the accuracy trade off vs. barrel length?  Which barrel length do you like?  What's the price of that sucker, got to be over $1500?  That's pretty pricey.
