I wonder why they think God cares about the use of electricity?

Can they not wear wool socks on cold days? Do they have to forsake their nervous systems?

It is sad they have gone from using the sabbath to worship God, to worshiping the sabbath. However, this is nothing new. Maybe it is a good thing, as entire structures won't be necessary for them.

People can't use elevators ("work"), but they can hike up 10 flights of stairs?  The latter is faaaar more work than the previous one.

I wonder why we care about the Jewish people's Sabbath laws ?

Actually, it is the issue of "starting fires", as using electrical devices, for some reason, violates this rule (it causes a "spark" or it can).

I care very little, at least, when it is compared to other religious practices, but it happened to be a news item which caught my eye on Yahoo news. I found it somewhat weird, as I am familiar with Jewish rules about the Sabbath, some of which are very strange, like the turning on devices as starting fires. This also leads to some very weird cases where there are Jewish tenants who have to deal with automatic motion activated lights on the property. A landlord can actually imprison Jewish tenants using motion sensitive lighting.

My main interest in it is that it is just weird. If there were a Muslim/Hindu/Humanist weird rule coming up which caught my eye, I'd probably post it too.

They made an entire elevator specifically for them. Isn't that enough?

For this, I don't think they'd be able to hire someone to operate an elevator for Jews. That would be rather impractical and expensive. For the shabbes goy, for those not using elevators which are automatic like this, they likely have equally prohibitive rules for using others.

I have no doubt there is a fundie evangelical somewhere who would gladly volunteer to push elevator buttons for Jews, if he could only be convinced that it will hasten the battle of Armageddon. Sticking tongue out at you

Because I wonder why we pick apart everything the Jewish people do, even when it has nothing to do with us. If we post threads about Jewish reaction to the Good Friday prayer, or the treatment of Palestinian Christians in the Holy Land, or why the Israel union drops the art exhibit portraying the Virgin Mary as a terrorist..... I care because it affects Catholicism.

But when we post threads about "weird" Sabbath laws, or ask why at least 139 of the Forbes 400 are Jewish, or why Orthodox Jews went on an ax-wielding rampage, or why Rabbi so-and-so wants to have 12 kids, or why a Harlem High School Jewish girl wanted her graduation ceremony moved from Saturday, or why a Chanukah version of the Dicken's Christmas Carol might make the protagonist become more greedy instead of more generous........I care because it makes all of us look like a bunch of paranoid Judaphobes.

Well, these elevators were banned because the weight of the people in it, would cause it to use more electricity. So having someone else push a button, and it have to "work" to lift them would not be kosher, literally.

However, I do doubt that the power requirements of an elevator which is automated would use any significantly more power because it lifted humans. The fact it is running all day anyway would be a large amount of power.
