Anyone? Anyone?
I've dabbled in it a bit . . . fascinated with the concept, I can see how it could be extremely fun and has a lot of room for creativity etc, but never really sat down and played a real campaign. I also really don't like the newer editions (3 & 4): too many rules, too damn many rules, combat takes too long, not to mention the general "feel" of the game which seems to have departed a fair amount from the light-heartedness of the older editions.
If anyone is curious about the older editions shoot me a PM.
Anywho . . . well talk about whatever, maybe nobody here plays it, dunno, new here.
I think it'd be pretty beast if someone ran a play-by-post AD&D 1E game here though :D
If anyone wonders about the game, it's really not as hard as people think it is. It has this reputation for being really math-heavy and stuff but it's mostly you saying what you're character is doing and occasionally rolling dice to figure out the outcomes of actions with an element of "randomness" (combat, climbing, etc.)

Heh... I used to be a big fan... Only reason I stopped playing is because i ran out of people to play with. Gotta say, though, you might want to take another look at Third edition... it's not nearly as watered down as fourth, but it's more streamlined than second... But you're exactly right, it's a ton of fun to be in with a bunch of buddies rampaging through a whole army of peon goblins... ;D

haha I've always wanted to play a megadungeon like they used to in the good ol' days. 15+ levels, hundreds of rooms, etc Ahh, those were the days. I DM'd one like that once, while working at Boy Scout summer camp... Went in with a party of Lvl. 1 peons, and when they staggered out of the dungeon a month later (real time), they were ready to do a toe-to-toe with a Balor. I was always of the school of presenting obscene challenges with insane rewards. People loved my adventures 'cause they knew they'd get mad loot, but they had to fight for it. ;D |

I've played a bit.  Only fourth edition though, so I don't know how it compares to the earlier games... I was a rogue halfling who stole things, killed vampires, and ate a lot of pie. Not a bad campaign! ;D I think it all depends on who you're playing with. Get a good DM, players with a good sense of humor, and a bottle of wine, and you've got a pretty nice evening. |

Ahh... memories.... It was a good time.... I agree with the stuff about 3rd vs. 4th (from what little I know of it). I love the game... it requires a great deal of imagination but a huge degree of creativity along with storytelling and problem solving that you just dont get in PC games... I'd love to do a game here if anyone would be up for it... Nothing quite like an Half Elven Half Aasimar Wizard that hates neutrals more than evil characters because they just cant make up their minds... am I right? ;D |

Instead of play-by-post maybe we could run it in chat? I dunno, if you wanna run it the choice should be up to you. What edition would you like to use? I have pdfs of all the editions from Original D&D (with Chainmail and the Supplements and Dragon Articles) up to 3rd, so any of 'em would work for me. I guess I'm partial to AD&D 1E myself, I do really like OD&D but the rules are such a mess that it's really hard to figure out how to play it. If anyone is interested in getting rulebooks just shoot me a PM. |
