Libby: You flatter me way, way too much. But I love you. I've learned a few things from the whippersnappers. One of the great discoveries of old age is that we're never too old to learn. When I was their age I knew it ALL.  Sticking tongue out at you

INPEFESS: The Theological subforum is new. I started a few threads there that actually went very well. But I think you're right in that tension has spilled over into other forums. That makes them hard to read. The Scripture subforum is a good place to hang if you know Scripture or have questions. Because the Church hasn't spoken definitively on every single Bible passage, there's a little bit of room for speculation, musings and ponderings, reflections on Church Fathers and comparing commentaries, etc.

don't you want somebody to love...

No :(

I'm sad too, and hesitant. That's why I put "I think" after "I'm leaving."  :(

I, too, have thought about leaving the message board. It seemed to be a source of stress and tension, but I realized after much consideration that it is what you make it - or rather, what you allow it to be. It can be a wonderful source of spiritual edification in this world of secularism, and to get a Catholic (especially traditional) perspective on the material elements of our every day lives can be very beneficial. There is so much opportunity for good here, but like all things involving humanity, there is always that flawed human nature that interferes. Those flaws have to be avoided and overlooked whenever possible in order to reap the potential spiritual benefits made available through communion with other Catholics. I (personally) have found this forum to be a wonderful place to learn humility, patience, and charity. When I'm on the forum, I usually turn on some polyphonic music or some Gregorian Chant and it can help to quell the agitation.

There are some very good examples here, too. There are Catholics here who say or act in a very inappropriate manner and then publically apologize later. There are those who seem to be filled with such a zeal for the Faith that they can't help but communicate it through every post they make. There are wonderful examples of charity, wisdom, and humility. Many present some very good ideas for Lenten sacrifices, encouraging stories of their pasts, and unique perspectives on various truths of the Faith.

In short: stay. Don't let the collective pride of humanity manifested in the various attitudes on this message board deter you from the opportunity to enjoy such a wonderful tool! But like all tools, there is a good way and a bad way to use them. Even using the tool carelessly can lead to injury. It seems you've been injured, but don't throw away the tool because of it. Try using it a different way - to pursue your personal spiritual goals - and help others in whatever way you can to help them reach their own.

Thanks INP. Good advice. To be honest, the last straw came when I got into a verbal sparring with someone who said something very hurtful. Maybe he's not even aware of it. I said some mean things too, and went back and deleted every single one of my posts on that thread. Obviously I have some issues of pride that need to be worked out.

Lisa, this might shock you, but consider this quote from Lumen Gentium (this might be the first and last time I do this  ;)):

Quote
The faithful, therefore, must learn the deepest meaning and the value of all creation, as well as its role in the harmonious praise of God. They must assist each other to live holier lives even in their daily occupations. In this way the world may be permeated by the spirit of Christ and it may more effectively fulfill its purpose in justice, charity and peace. The laity have the principal role in the overall fulfillment of this duty. Therefore, by their competence in secular training and by their activity, elevated from within by the grace of Christ, let them vigorously contribute their effort, so that created goods may be perfected by human labor, technical skill and civic culture for the benefit of all men according to the design of the Creator and the light of His Word. May the goods of this world be more equitably distributed among all men, and may they in their own way be conducive to universal progress in human and Christian freedom. In this manner, through the members of the Church, will Christ progressively illumine the whole of human society with His saving light.

Moreover, let the laity also by their combined efforts remedy the customs and conditions of the world, if they are an inducement to sin, so that they all may be conformed to the norms of justice and may favor the practice of virtue rather than hinder it. By so doing they will imbue culture and human activity with genuine moral values; they will better prepare the field of the world for the seed of the Word of God; and at the same time they will open wider the doors of the Church by which the message of peace may enter the world.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that. Of course, as you well know, the hardest part is acknowledging the problem. I have the same problems, but this message board provides a good opportunity to face some of your biggest faults - especially because everyone else has to face them, too.

I hope that my post relating to the causes suicidal tendencies wasn't a factor in your desire to leave...

No, it has nothing to do with anything on the prayer forum. It's mainly the two top subforums, and specifically the recent JPII threads. Even the person who made the most damning quotes admitted he might be leading souls to Hell. And another poster said:

Frankly, I don't think I can swim in the Fishtank much longer.  I'm sure many of you are quite more advanced in holiness than myself, however, there is a prevailing sense of self-righteousness and presumption in many posts, and I don't think that's very healthy..

That's what it's about.

I haven't read the entire thread but hope you don't leave Lisa, you have been here since I stared and I've always respected your balanced and well thought out opinions. I don't post too much on the apologetic or Catholic theological forums because I'm not really qualified to debate on many of those issues. And from what I've been hearing, it sounds like it gets pretty nasty in there on certain subjects, but I wouldn't take it so personal, people vent in their own way and channel their frustration in their posts, especially on what's going on with the Church, which brings up my own personal reasons for staying here because I have my own struggle with faith issues and staying with the Church of Rome in which sometimes FE keeps me hanging on just a little bit longer. For every bad or offensive post there are hundreds of good or insightful ones, I believe the good tremendously outweighs the bad here.

I believe you're a positive and popular asset to the forum, so, take a break and come back. I think you will feel better in time, anyway, I hope you stick in there.

My .02.
