For Gothic, I'll take the French.  For modern, the Italian (because it's bound to be less bad than the French.  Who builds a Cube across from Notre Dame de Paris?)

Cats, no question.

By the way, when I was a kid, we caught a butterfly and a bumblebee in a jar, and let them fight it out.  The butterfly battered the bumblebee to oblivion.  C'est vrai!
