A quick, and seemingly stupid, question for everyone regarding Tenebrae (1962 EF):

The Lectern goes on the centre of the Sanctuary, but which way round does it point? The Sanctuary is set up ad orientem. Does the Lector therefore face the Altar, or the people, when reading?

At my church the Lectors faced the altar.

In the FSSP seminary in Denton, I believe the lectern was actually placed in the center of the nave (or a bit more towards the sanctuary, but not in it) and the office was read facing the altar.

Something to this effect:

Would you please spare an AVE for my deceased Aunt Elizabeth who left us on July 16th 2010? May God reward you.

My memory says that the lector faced neither the altar nor the people, but the stalls were the presiding priest (ordinarius, abbas, rector of the Seminary, pastor of the Church) was sitting, but the lector stood on the people's side of the opposite stall.

Thank you everyone!

glgas: what year was that? The reason I ask is that from 1965 onwards no-one really "presided... (the rubrics make this clear)

1965 wasn't good old time any more. My memories are from the late forties related to the tenebrae till 1957. On that time there was someone who gave the benediction, also the hebdomodarius who read some special invocations, and the choir. The lector was someone from the choir.

My parish didn't do Tenebrae according to 1962, but the officiant sang the lamentations, etc. from the pulpit on the gospel side of the church.

Praying for the dead is important. PM me if you need a cantor for the Requiem Mass of a deceased friend or family member. Have cassock and surplice, will travel. (Will also do weddings for a reasonable price.)

The lecturn ought to face the altar, as it does for Compline and as the Subdeacon does at Solemn Mass. The rubric, as I recall, indicates it should be placed in the middle of the choir. It is permitted to have the lecturn in the nave, just as it is permissble to have the Subdeacon or Deacon sing the gospel in the middle of the church, instead of the sanctuary. In larger churches, where there was a great distance from the altar to the nave, this was common place.
