What about rugby? I know we were talking indoor games, but are there full contact sports at a seminary?

"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child. But, when I became a man, I put away the things of a child." - 1 Cor. 13:11 Try to find an grown up diversion and put away the kiddie games then you won't have to worry about such dilemmas. This post is worthy of reviving the Fish Factor. +1.

As our Lord said, if our eye causes us to sin, we must pluck it out. If games lead us to sin or to near occasions of it, better to get rid of them altogether.
I can enjoy a game occasionally, but I'm too old to make it a habit.

If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, etc.
If a game causes you to sin, don't play it! If you're shooting at someone in a video game, you're shooting pixels. If you're seeing naked women in a video game, you're looking at porn.

I really don't think it a big deal...I postulate these games may be healthy catharsis of pent aggression or anger. But once in a while, like, in Dante's Inferno when the video game character has to slaughter unbaptized babies in Hell fire...you know theres a limit where you may be absorbing bad thoughts through game play.
But, in the end, I think there are bigger dilemmas to address. It's really about the mental effect these games have on you and your own personal moral inventory of yourself after you engage in play. I think it may be healthy. But, alas, I can't even win against my brother at the Wii Resorts Frisbee Dog, so video games have never been my strong suit.

I agree with this. I don't really play any computer games anymore (having children takes up a lot of time!), but I used to. I just never put my characters in any position where I would see anything that made me uncomfortable. I still sometimes play Sims 3 (ultimate girl game, I know), and I just avoid having my sims do things like have premarital sex, have homosexual relationships, etc. I am sure this Bioshock game is a different story, but it sounds like you've found a way to work around the violence issue. I really want to try Starcraft 2, I hear it is really good. However unless God starts making 48 hr days I doubt I will ever try it!

I can no longer play such games in good conscience. If it is immoral to do a certain thing in real life, then why would you do it in a game? I don't see how this could be pleasing to God.

I don't know about seminary, but one of the monasteries that Fontevrault and I support sent us a picture of the brothers playing American football. It was probably two-hand touch, but it's still active...

I wonder if playing Monopoly violates Catholic economic teaching, or if Risk goes against just war doctrine. Just a thought.

Please read and subscribe to my blog: Modern Medievalism. Applying old-world solutions to new-world problems. Praying for the dead is important. PM me if you need a cantor for the Requiem Mass of a deceased friend or family member. Have cassock and surplice, will travel. (Will also do weddings for a reasonable price.)
