Should I just give up and try to run this using Wine?

Ok, I am currently trying to get my mse-0.38-linux.tar.gz to run. I managed to unpack it, apparently. However, now when I try to run the install, I keep getting a mkdir: cannot create directory '$home/.magicseteditor/': no such file or directory . It continues, giving me a cp: cannot stat 'program/*' no such file or directory and another one with the ln, where it can't create it my symbolic link because--wait for it--there is no such file or directory. What am I doing wrong? :(
I don't believe you can create a directory in Linux whose name starts with "$". That's reserved for variables. Is the installation automatically trying to do that? Sorry - I'm sure this is no help...

Yes, it's trying to do that automatically. I was simply running the install script. I don't really know what to do next.

Love it. If i didn't need Adobe InDesign and numerous school-related software packages, I would use it exclusively.
Once I graduate, goodbye Windows, hello 'buntu.
(Although, Windows 7 is rather nice...)

I wonder if there's a way to open up the script and change that directory name to a valid one. I'm not sure though. Be sure and google the .exe name, if you haven't done so already. A solution could very well exist on an Ubuntu forum somewhere. (Herr, get in here and help out!)

I have this fondness for old PC games. NWN is one of the newer ones I like. (I also play--and have modded extensively--Baldur's Gate II, as well as Planescape: Torment. I'd love to be able to play those, too! But I'm trying to start with the easier stuff first.) Anyway, I guess I'll give it a shot in Wine. If that runs fine, then I'll probably pass on installing the editor on Ubuntu proper. After all, the Magic editor, which is what I'm trying to install now, doesn't even have fonts installed on the Linux version. Sigh.

Umm--there isn't a manual for this program, and even the read-me was of no help. It told me I probably needed some library or other (which I promptly installed), but that if I weren't using a platform with that library there was probably "something out there" I could download. Anyway, I have the program running in Wine, but this does not bode well for my being able to run my computer games. :(

Alot of games need further tweaks to get running. Most pre Windows NT games work near perfect, although some have trouble with CD streaming. I have a few very new games (2008) that are perfect, though. What in all are you trying to run exactly? As to the original question, I love (K)ubuntu. There are some minor gripes, but its a improvement over Windows.

Sorry - I'm sure this is no help... $HOME is a variable (an environment variable). It is used in setup (and other things) to reference the users home directory: ~$echo $HOME /home/herr_mannelig ~$
(Note, this is not a copy and paste...my account name on my computer is something else) $home is not $HOME
