Greetings all,
My name is jon and I am new to this forum, if not to 'traditional' Catholicism, although I am somewhat new to using that term. Let me briefly explain.....
My wife and I are from New Orleans, La. We are Bywater/Upper 9th Ward natives and have moved to North Carolina in the last year and half. I suppose you might say that I have taken Catholicism for granted having been so immersed in Catholic culture in a state so Catholic that we have Parish's instead of counties. We don't eat fish on Fridays, and didn't even know that it was a practice no longer in vogue until we moved up here. In fact, there are a great deal of things I didn't realize until we moved up here.
First off, it is odd indeed to be so thoroughly surrounded, culturally and physically by protestants.
So far what I have learned of them consists mostly of the fact that they do not appreciate being called heretics and they are obstinately convinced that they are going to heaven to a man. There is no real point debating with them, so truthfully I don't bother unless I am joking one of them. (In humor, not maliciously)
Second, the Catholics that we have encountered up here seem to be more protestant themselves than Catholic. We first had attempted to hear Mass at a local Catholic Church which was bizarre to see in of itself. I could not find a font upon entering (only some manner of waterfall/pool thing that looked like a piece of pop art and would have been nearly impossable to reach into so I didn't bother. It just went downhill from there....
The only Tridentine Mass we can find up here is about an hour or so from us in Mt. Airy. If anyone has any suggestions I am open to hearing them.

Welcome to the tank!
I lived in Louisiana for about 4 years but never made it to New Orleans! Bummer for me. It was a lovely place, but it didn't take me long to figure out that northern Louisiana, where I was, had a completely different culture from southern Louisiana. I would love to have seen N.O. pre-Katrina.
