Icecream, the router already works with his smart phones.

On this note, don't use Outlook or Internet Explorer until Microsoft stops integrating them into the OS. So many malware attacks on Windows rely on users using the defaults: IE and Outlook. Any flaw allows many to be infected. This is not (just) an anti-Microsoft thing, but a real problem. The single source of code (Microsoft) and the integration of it into the OS, coupled with Windows on most OEM boxes, results in a too big of identical setups which results in any security flaw being amplified. A single flaw allows a bad guy to get many positive hits without even trying.

Well a really great solution would be to drop in an Ubuntu disk, and when it asks if you want to delete the entire hard drive, type Yes.  (Of course after you had already saved all your work files).

Not really, at least, in this situation.

Although, it would be a good idea (now that I think of it) to try a live disk which can use the wireless on the computer. That would eliminate hardware problems, however, it could not necessarily confirm them.

But finding if it works with other wireless access points is still a more useful step.

He wasn't entirely serious in it being a specific solution, but that it was a long term solution to switch to a Real Operating System (well, one of them, I don't like Ubuntu).

And one cannot reinstall something which was not installed before ;)

In the help I give, I first focus on the immediate problem and try to solve that quickly no matter how bad I think the underlying choices are. If someone wants to enable the root account on Ubuntu, I can tell them how to do that, even though I advise against it. Only when I have evidence that a person is mistaking the problem to I offer correction.

They'd not be able to do much. The troubleshooting steps I gave would cover what they could. At best, they'd recommend resetting the router or, if they thought it was a problem with the router (which, I wouldn't count on at this point until the rest is eliminated), they'd replace it.

I think if we got the ipconfig info, that would go a long way.  That will show how DNS is setup, if DHCP is being used, etc.

Like, here's mine:

Blanche is named after one of Vox's rats who died.  She in turn was named after Blanche in the movie "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?"  Her sister rat was named "Baby Jane", of course, which is the name of another computer I have.  Also, Petunia, named after our chicken who died this year.

I also have computers named after philosophers and H.P. Lovecraft mythos.  You can see my domain is Rlyeh which is where Cthuhlu lies.  The Domain Controller is named Cthulhu for obvious reasons.   ;D

Nice. My computers are getting Pharaoh names recently. Someone suggested that I name my new desktop (on a thread on the forum) Juliet because I had a bird named Romeo (dead pets seem to be common sources of names...probably a cracker opportunity there).

RamsesII and Thutmose are my new Thinkpads Smile
