experience of spiritual director

Would anybody mind sharing with me how your sessions of spiritual direction go? Is it just a matter of asking him questions when having a specific problem? Then what is discussed when there is not a particular struggle? My director lives far away and so we talk over the phone. Maybe I am expecting too much, I don't know. It just seems that he really doesn't know me, or maybe I thought he would say, "Do this this and this" and you'll be closely united to God. I don't know. I just know that I don't seem to be making any progress in my relationship with God., but maybe my attitude isn't right. Maybe the problem is me and not that I have the wrong priest. Or maybe I'm expecting too much. Should I be studying over what Father tells me as if lecture talks? I would just appreciate some light on this subject. I would especially like to hear from people who get their spiritual direction over the phone. Many thanks!
