Snow Moves In, Forces I-70 Closure

April 3, 2011 1:28 PM

Written by Meteorologist Corey Christiansen

DENVER (CBS4) - A blast of winter is barreling through Colorado Sunday, just one day after Denver experienced record heat.

A cold front raced across the high country and into the Denver area Sunday morning. Snowfall got so heavy at the Eisenhower Tunnel that officials with the Colorado Department of Transportation were forced to close the Interstate 70 in both directions at midday. The closure stretched from Floyd Hill to Silverthorne. Also Vail Pass was closed.

The Colorado Rockies also postponed their Sunday afternoon game against the Arizona Diamondbacks as snow fell in the metro area. (Full Story)

The thermometer reached the mid 60s early Sunday before the storm arrived, and temperatures will drop rapidly through the afternoon. A mix of rain and snow will develop at about 1 p.m. and will then switch over to snow throughout the rest of the day.

The winds will stay gusty until the late evening. A total of 2 to 4 inches of snow will be possible along the Front Range, including the Denver metro area. Foothill locations will see up to 6 inches.

In the mountains, this storm will cause big travel problems. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until midnight Sunday for the central and northern mountains. These areas will see 10 to 18 inches of snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect until midnight Sunday for the Eisenhower Tunnel and Winter Park areas for 7 to 12 inches of snow. The southwestern mountains will pick up 4 to 8 inches.

On Saturday strong chinook winds smashed Denver’s previous record of 76 degrees and replaced it wind a mind-blowing 84! Strong winds in Larimer County also stoked the Crystal Fire near Fort Collins early Sunday morning and it grew to more than 2,000 acres, forcing evacuations. (Full Story)

The storm will move out quickly during the morning hours on Monday. No snowfall is expected for the Monday commute, but there will likely be some slushy or icy spots on the roads. Highs Monday will be in the upper 40s with mostly sunny skies. Temperatures rebound to near 70 Tuesday.

Come back to Ohio, then! (On second thought, the weather in CO sounds kinda similar enough to SW Ohio's.)  Shrug

Gov. Hickenlooper appoints new Director of Paper Distribution in the Department of Natural Resources

Friday, April 1, 2011 – Gov. John Hickenlooper announced today the appointment of Michael Scott to serve as the new Director of Paper Distribution for the Department of Natural Resources.

“Scott’s success in selling paper will help Colorado effectively and efficiently move the large amount of bark beetle lumber from the forest and into the marketplace, creating tons of jobs and making lots of money,” Hickenlooper said. “This is a unique opportunity to resolve Colorado’s forest health and budget issues.”

Scott, of Scranton, Pa., recently announced he is leaving his job as the regional branch manager for Dunder Mifflin Paper. Scott has served in this position since 1994 and is moving to Colorado to join his fiancé, Holly Flax, who is returning home to care for her elderly parents.

Scott was also a small business owner, having successfully started the Michael Scott Paper Co. in 2009. The company was later purchased by his former employer, Dunder Mifflin, which restored Scott and his employees Pam Halpert (née Beesley) and Ryan Howard to their previous positions.

Scott has a unique management approach, where he spends 80 percent of his time “distracting others,” 19 percent of his time “procrastinating,” and 1 percent of his time “critical thinking.”

“Scott will be a wonderful addition to our paper team, focusing particularly on the use of beetle kill in paper production,” Hickenlooper said. “We hired him based on his skills, personal drive and love for ‘That’s what she said’ jokes.”

Scott’s appointment is effective April 28, which is his final day on “The Office.”

I never experienced four seasons in one day in SW Ohio. It would take an effortless move and equally effortless and successful career search for me to move back. I like sun, mountains, and my parish.

I hear ya. I don't like my native Cincinnati much, but I really like my parish and the fact that I don't have to drive an hour to get there. So that's one incentive for me to stay where I'm at.

I miss the Riverfront and hitting a Reds game in the summer. I also miss the food and coziness of some of the neighborhoods. I wish I were in NKY for some of the UK basketball games, too. But Colorado is, most likely, where I will be buried.

Home is where you make it. If I'm buried outside Ohio, no complaints here.

I make it sound like I hate my native state, but I don't. I just don't think that one's point of origin is also necessarifly one's 'definitive' home, which is, I guess, what you're also sorta saying.
