I wanted to ask all of you in the Divine Office forum - I've been praying the MD from Farnborough for abut a year, along with the monastic matins from Lancelot andrewes.  I actually just purchased the monastic diurnal from lancelot andrewes, because the MD from farnborough does not have the matins for the Tridium.  I actually love the translation by Lancelot andrewes, I'm thinking of praying the lancelot andrewes monastic diurnal for the days hours versus the MD from Farnborough.  I just really love the lancelot andrewes version.  Questions... do you guys think I'm crazy?

I welcome feedback.

Tanx,

Michael

You ain't crazy. I have their Matins. It's so good I've asked them to see if they would print it in Latin. If they printed the Diurnal in Latin, I'd buy it too. My Farmborough is missing lots of the rubrics and capitals and psalm numbers, it's a mess. I've emailed them three times and have gotten no satisfaction.  I asked a Benedictine about the translation, and he asked Dom Alciun Reid, an expert on Liturgy, and he said it is good, so I have no problem with their books.

I am one of those confused breviary guys who own them all, to include the LOTH, and the old 1960's Collegeville English/Latin Roman Breviary, the Collegeville short breviaries from the 50's and 60's, etc. Hands down, the Anglican have them all beat. I am pleased to read Dom Reid's approval by the way - or at least he has no objections. I found the Lancelot Matins priceless and when Easter rolled around and I could not match the Tridium in the Farnborough edition of the MD, I bought their MD too. I now have a smooth transition from Matins (book) to the MD. No more buying sprees for me. I need to keep the LOTH for community prayer when I visit my abbey but I still will rely on the Anglicans for decent and proper private prayer - as scandalous as that may sound.

I pray from the Farnborough one. I couldn't reconcile myself to praying Coverdale psalms. Sorry, just couldn't do it. What would be nice is if a Catholic edition used that text as a basis with some tweaking.

Unless it absorbs the gift of the Spirit through faith, the mind has the ability to know God, but lacks the light necessary for that knowledge. This unique gift which is in Christ is offered in its fullness to everyone. It is everywhere available, but it is given to each man in proportion to his readiness to receive it. Its presence is fuller, the greater a man's desire to be worthy of it. This gift will remain with us until the end of the world, and will be our comfort in the time of waiting.

Yes, not crazy at all!  I've used the LA MD and Matins for a couple weeks now, and much enjoy the reverently-rendered prayers and passages.  I only wish LA could have made a single volume tome, unwieldy though it would probably be - but as it stands now, great work in two volumes that are easy to hold single-handed.  No buyer's remorse whatsoever.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm going to try praying both the monastic diurnal and the matins from Lancelot Andrewes for a week and see where I'm at.  I've really struggled with my decision for which breviary to pray.  All I know is that I am seeking deeper prayer with the Lord.

I purchased the Lancelot Andrewes Matins Volume. Highly disappointed. Low quality. No ribbons.

I just can't get over the BCP/King James language. (I used to be Anglican so it's noticeable to me.)

I wouldn't recommend it. Though, if you want it, I'll sell you mine.

Unrelated, but welcome Taylor, nice to see you here.  You don't know me, but I enjoy your blog and read it regularly.
