A lady, such as yourself, never gets old.

"THE LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 26:1)
"And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." — Clement, bishop of Rome
"I love truth," says he, "and not sects. I am sometimes a peripatetic, a stoic, or an academician, and often none of them; but—always a Christian. To philosophise is to love wisdom; and the true wisdom is Jesus Christ. Let us read the historians, the poets, and the philosophers; but let us have in our hearts the gospel of Jesus Christ, in which alone is perfect wisdom and perfect happiness." — Petrarch

To clarify, I try to practice the medieval chivalric virtues (courtesy, loyalty, honor, generosity, etc.) on my own terms. Everyone deserves courtesy, even worthy enemies. But I don't believe a woman is entitled to deference simply for being a woman; I assume this means the typical opening of doors, pulling out of chairs, flimsy handshakes and avoiding the use of obscenities.
Only the last of these applies in online situations. Under what circumstances do you think a woman is entitled to deference? Online nobility (VoxClamantis). Online nice old ladies (StrictCatholicGirl). I just saw this.

Or very, very deceitful. There is a rumour that there is only one person on this site. I, who post under thousands of accounts, and one other. You, the reader of this, may be that one other member...

Now that I've met two other fishies in person (and hopefully two more this summer) I know your theory is silliness personified!! ...or is this post just Rosarium under another name...

I'm saying that in my experience of male posters treating me "gently," it has come across as patronizing. Just something to think about.
I suppose this is never an issue for me because I just don't expect anyone to ever think I am a dumb female. I wouldn't expect it either, but you never know. So, even though you don't really think they think you are dumb, when they treat you gently you take that as them thinking you are dumb? I find this very puzzling. I don't expect them to think that I'm dumb, but sometimes they might and I can't be sure. Bottom line, if you treat a poster with respect, that is treating her like a lady (or him like a gentleman). I don't see why a female poster needs extra respect in the form of gentleness. Hm. That is something to think about. Now I'll have to stop and think if I'm thinking that another person is thinking that I'm thinking they're dumb when I speak to them.
