Does anyone have a remedy for cramps in the calf at night which are painful and last some minutes.  I have venous stasis and the cramps are not predictable. I've had many theories for what causes them but none of my remedies seem to work. Any ideas, fellow fishies ?

Have you tried standing on the leg? I find that usually makes those cramps go away in an instant.

Magnesium? That is my first thought, if you have not tried that yet.

Hope you find some relief!

This might be way off your mark, but my leg cramps happen when I stretch in my sleep. I end up either pointing my toes away from or towards myself (I'm not sure which)... anyway...the only remedy for me has been to quickly point my toes in the other direction.. It takes the pain away immediately. Did that make sense?

This is probably related to what I recommended.  I think getting the muscle to move relieves the pain.

I heard that leg cramps are caused by a potassium deficiency.

The milk-first school can bring forward some fairly strong arguments, but I maintain that my own argument is unanswerable. This is that, by putting the tea in first and stirring as one pours, one can exactly regulate the amount of milk, whereas one is liable to put in too much milk if one does it the other way round."

Good point. An electrolyte imbalance could make you miserable.

Tim, I was thinking about an exercise my son used to do for congenitally short calf muscles that may help, here http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/calf-stretch Maybe you could try it a few times before bed or when the pain hits.

Hope you had a better night last night.

Thanks fishies. I've tried much of what you've said but the remedies about stretching and standing don't work very well anymore. I take pottasium every day, too, it comes with my old parts not working well. Have any of you heard of drinking Kosher Dill Pickle juice ? My Doctor is non plus on this, as well as the whole venous stasis thing. The thing which hurts the most they aren't interested in ! Healthcare, who needs it, give me an old fashioned Doctor.

I'm with you on that one. The pickle juice reminded me of something... I have one "old wives' tale" remedy for various things that I will swear by and that is apple cider vinegar. I used to be on constant heartburn/ulcer meds, years and years of these damn pills and I never got any better. Sometimes it got bad enough to go to the ER for the pain. I started taking a swig of apple cider vinegar, every now and then, and my problems were gone, just like that. Very cool. My husband told his coworker about it and he swears by it now for lots of stuff. He said it's even been helping with his diabetes. Is it true or in his head? I don't know. I know it sounds like quackery, but IMO, vinegar is a pretty cool little drink. Try google and see if there's any info about leg cramps and vinegar. Couldn't hurt to try.

I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar. Maybe you've got something, there, and it's safe.
