I'm feeling both, but I have fears about this sort of thing to start with so...it hasn't helped. I think we all knew deep down that this was going on but I do wish we had been wrong. I preferred to be wrong and give the benefit of the doubt until further notice. It'll take me a little while to feel comfortable again, but it also serves as a warning not to get too comfortable.

I am concerned about this having a negative impact on some people's faith.  When we trust people and they deceive us, does that make it harder to trust God?

Certainly makes it harder to take a 'trad' Catholic forum seriously, especially for people growing in the faith. This should remind us all never to presume to teach or guide others without due deference to clergy and sound Church teachings.

This. It only causes us to lose faith in mere men.

It doesn't hurt trust in God. God is perfect and cannot deceive nor be deceived. Never forget that

I thank God that I live in a day when the enemy is outside the Church, and I know where he is and what he is up to. But, I foresee a day when the enemy will be both outside and inside the Church . . . and I pray now for the poor faithful who will be caught in the crossfire.

I have actually been thinking this is a very sad lesson from this.  Someone had prominently argued to deny Laura's story was to deny miracles happen.

But, now we find out Laura's story was false...

Laura's story was at the end of the day not really that miraculous.  Lots of people will medical issues find faith in their final days.  But, now that we know he story wasn't true how will we react the next time someone shows up here who is ill and seeking conversion? How will we react if a miracle actually happens...

I think it was all a bit too elaborate. Either Quis was in on it, or he swallowed the whole ploy hook, line and sinker. And the 'Laura's welcome wagon' thing just seemed excessive and in retrospect, needlessly grotesque.

but don't understand why you jayne would wish to keep something such as this when the truth was fully known hushed.

Sorry.  I can't quite understand what you are saying to me.  Perhaps you could rephrase.

I don't think Laura was ill when she first signed up. What's most interesting for me is how Laura, someone who was clearly dishonest and probably mentally disturbed, managed to endear herself to so many people here in such a short amount of time. I certainly thought she was a gentle book-nerd. I also remember Quis saying that he spoke to Laura and Ty on the phone, so maybe another person was in on this (presumably Quis can tell the difference between male and female voices).

Why wouldn't the devil work his wiles in a community full of Catholics? We've just seen the facade torn away and it's not a bad thing to be reminded that the prince of this world operates all over the place to twist people's hearts and minds away from God - even somewhere as seemingly inconsequential as an internet forum.

I would like to start a movement to create Scipio's Welcome Wagon.  No more coddling of newbies!  Scipio's Welcome Wagon would consist of: Scipio, Alaric, Voxpopulisuxx, and maybe Vetus if he promises to be consistently grouchy!
