Allan has requested that some of us "substitute" for him praying the DO on the day he goes into surgery - Aug 17. See this post in the Oratory: http://catholicforum.fisheaters.com/index.php/topic,3442676.0.htmlI don't have a book for this and have never done it before, although I am familiar with the modern version. The prayers are available online, right? How can I do this?

The simplest thing to do is use divinumofficium.com and select the "Rubrics 1960" option. It will lay out all of the prayers for you.

Thank you. It took me a while to figure out how to make it do that but I think I've got it now. Does it explain somewhere what times the various prayers should be said?

Roughly, here are the appropriate times:
Matins/Lauds (said together) - early morning Prime - 6am Terce - 9am Sext - 12pm None - 3pm Vespers - Sundown Compline - at bedtime (before midnight)
In the 1960 rubrics, Matins may be anticipated the previous day as early as 2pm. It is not uncommon to group together hours (simply said consecutively) in order to fit your schedule. Solo recitation is much more flexible than choir, so as long as the whole office is said within the bounds of the 24 hours of the day, excluding Matins if anticipated, then the obligation is fulfilled. Of course, as a lay Catholic, you are free to do as much or as little as you wish.

I thought it was more like this: (Or is this just for monastics?) (I know you can be flexible with praying this alone, but I'm just wondering) Matins (during the night, at midnight with some), Lauds or Dawn Prayer (at Dawn, or 3 a.m.)Prime or Early Morning Prayer (First Hour = approximately 6 a.m.) Terce or Mid-Morning Prayer (Third Hour = approximately 9 a.m.) Sext or Midday Prayer (Sixth Hour = approximately 12 noon) None or Mid-Afternoon Prayer (Ninth Hour = approximately 3 p.m.) Vespers or Evening Prayer ("at the lighting of the lamps", generally at 6 p.m.) Compline or Night Prayer (before retiring, generally at 9 p.m.) Also, Jayne you probably already did this but make sure you select "all" from the options on the far-left, it makes it easier if you don't have some of the basic prayers memorized or are going to say them in Latin if you chose. Also you can try out the other rubrics besides 1960 if you want, I like the Trident 1910 one. Divinium Officium is an excellent site, it makes the Divine office really easy to pray.

I've never seen anything that required a secular priest to wake up in the middle of the night to recite Matins.

Thanks, Jovan. That would be kinda difficult for a priest to do everyday with their sometimes very busy schedules.
