Here's my only thinking on circumcision...

It's the norm in western society (or at least in America).  The poor kid would probably be teased when he was involved with sports and may have to have a strange conversation with his wife-to-be one day.

I really don't know much about it, but it seems like life is just easier for the kid.

Given the long list of potential side effects (including death from blood loss - often hidden by the absorbency of a disposable diaper), I don't think "he might be teased" is a good enough reason. Kids will find a reason to tease others, no matter what you do.

And strange conversations? I recall this conversation between my husband I just before we were married. It wasn't that strange.

I think people grossly overestimate the looking different issue.

How often do kids die from circumcision?  I think that's extremely rare.

For what is worth:
In large studies of infant circumcision in the United States, reported inpatient complication rates range from 0.2% to 2.0% [1, 14, 15]. The most common complications in the United States are minor bleeding and local infection.

.... There were no reported deaths or long-term sequelae documented [9, 10, 11, 16].

It's not as popular as it was even 20 years ago. Circumcision rates in the US are anywhere from 50% (coasts) to 80% (midwest) and declining. It is highly unlikely that any boy born in 2011 is going to be the weirdo in the locker room.

The risks and benefits on both sides of the coin are small. Most circumcised boys do just fine as do most uncircumcised boys. It boils down to what the parents can live with. Personally, at this point in the parenting adventure I can't stand to see my baby boys cut anymore . I have 5 boys. 4 circ'd, 1 not.  Uncirc'd baby boy has had zero issues. Circ'd baby boys almost all had adhesions, where the foreskin tries to readhere, necessitating pulling it back manually, which is pretty much like pulling apart a fresh wound daily to keep it from healing.

This was my impression. Where did you find your stats?

The most recent circ factsheet I know of:

A NYT with some very recent statistics:
