So I'm trying to prep for manuscript writing and my former charismatic, praying in tongues, pro-choice, NO Catholic, "lector" Mom calls to tell me about her 50 year reunion in D.C for joining the Peace Corps . "Not surprising", you say. But wait! She then relates how one of her Peace Corps friends (who has 12 kids - "Isn't that great! And she's so happy too!") took her to mass at some Arlington, VA NO church that uses incense and says the Leonine prayers after mass. She couldn't stop talking about how great that was. I'm starting to think "What planet am I on? Am I actually awake? Is someone playing a joke on me?" Not so much. As it turns out, she was just getting warmed up, because then she started talking about Sr. Lucy and what the Third Secret REALLY said. At this point I practically lost consciousness, because I've never even mentioned Fatima to my mother. Clearly this can't ACTUALLY be happening. There has to be a rational explanation for it. The only conclusion I could come to was that one of you Fish Eaters has been secretly in communication with my mother. So all I need to know now is WHICH ONE OF YOU IS IT? (And whoever it is, Thanks!)

"O souls, redeemed by the Blood of Jesus Christ, take these things to heart; have mercy on yourselves! If you realize your pitiable condition, how can you refrain from trying to remove the darkness from the crystal of your souls? Remember, if death should take you now, you would never again enjoy the light of this Sun. O Jesus! how sad a sight must be a soul deprived of light! " St Teresa de Jesus, The Interior Castle

Actually Tim, you're pretty close to the mark. My mom did her graduate work at Berkeley in the mid '60s. I'm pretty sure she didn't do any acid, but her friends did call her P. the Red after her somewhat Marxist political bent at the time. But yes, it is an amazing (and hilarious) blessing!

Landelinus, I was coloring my remarks and I was not implying anything. I remeber the time vividly. much of which I do not care to reveal. Berkley, you couldn't get farther left in those days. I'll bet your mom wore a scapular somewhere back then. I'd also bet in her mind seeing the Tlm again, brought lots back to her. It did for me. Oh and that was a nice piece of writing, Landelinus.

Thanks, and no worries Tim! I knew you weren't implying anything - I was just adding more color of my own! I do love listening to my parents' stories from that time; although in all honesty they were pretty square. They met at the Newman club ... and yes, my mom probably did wear the scapular back then. I'm sure Grandma insisted on it.

"THE LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 26:1)
"And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." — Clement, bishop of Rome
"I love truth," says he, "and not sects. I am sometimes a peripatetic, a stoic, or an academician, and often none of them; but—always a Christian. To philosophise is to love wisdom; and the true wisdom is Jesus Christ. Let us read the historians, the poets, and the philosophers; but let us have in our hearts the gospel of Jesus Christ, in which alone is perfect wisdom and perfect happiness." — Petrarch
