I hope this thread won't turn into a debate... I am just wondering about the wording of something I read about modesty.

Just so you know, this thread will turn into a debate.

Quote from: The_Harlequin_King
It WILL turn into a debate, as fluffy says.

Quote from: Mithrandylan
Any chance of it not turning into a debate disappeared when HK posted that picture.

Quote from: miss_fluffy
Actually, this seems to be taking a relatively long time to turn into a debate for a modesty thread.  We should time these things, we might have a record.

Quote from: The_Curt_Jester
That's because they're already busy in the other thread.  Can't have two going at once, right?

Quote from: kayla_veronica
It will be. No question. Any thread involving modesty here will turn into debate.

Enter Scriptorium and Deo Duce, and voila!

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.– Buddha

Note: According to this precept, I find that Buddhism is NOT true.  I have tested and judged many things, and the only Truth I have found is in God's One True Church: The Catholic Church.

Dear Lord, I know I can live by Your Holy Will every moment of my life, because You have given me faith that Your Grace will enable me to.

Well, I've read this thread in some detail and all I can say is Scriptorium, you are one sick puppy! I strongly advise good spiritual direction hand in hand with therapy under a good, orthodox Catholic therapist. You need HELP!

This too.

Both men and women alike should keep this in mind when attempting to justify certain popular fashions that are designed to adapt to a society glorifies its anomie:
Quote from: Pope Pius XII
This second virtue, modesty - the very word “modesty” comes from modus, a measure or limit - probably better expresses the function of governing and dominating the passions, especially sensual passions. It is the natural bulwark of chastity. It is its effective rampart, because it moderates acts closely connected with the very object of chastity [...] Yet no matter how broad and changeable the relative morals of styles may be, there is always an absolute norm to be kept after having heard the admonition of conscience warning against approaching danger: style must never be a proximate occasion of sin. [...] An excess of immodesty in fashion involves, in practice, the cut of the garment. The garment must not be evaluated according to the estimation of a decadent or already corrupt society, but according to the aspirations of a society which prizes the dignity and seriousness of its public attire. [...] It is often said almost with passive resignation that fashions reflect the customs of a people. But it would be more exact and much more useful to say that they express the decision and moral direction that a nation intends to take: either to be shipwrecked in licentiousness or maintain itself at the level to which it has been raised by religion and civilization.

No one is advocating anything immodest- as you know.

That is what is being debated here.

Also sleeveless or short sleeves are not a new trend , it's been done in various forms for centuries.

I posted the words of Pope Pius XII. I made no case against any specific fashion.

"The practice of the Church has always been the same, as is shown by the unanimous teaching of the Fathers, who were wont to hold as outside Catholic communion, and alien to the Church, whoever would recede in the least degree from any point of doctrine proposed by her authoritative magisterium" (Pope Leo XIII, Satis Cognitum, no.  9, June 29, 1896).

“Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time” (2 Peter 1:10).

"Tenthly, one should pour tea into the cup first. This is one of the most controversial points of all; indeed in every family in Britain there are probably two schools of thought on the subject. The milk-first school can bring forward some fairly strong arguments, but I maintain that my own argument is unanswerable. This is that, by putting the tea in first and stirring as one pours, one can exactly regulate the amount of milk, whereas one is liable to put in too much milk if one does it the other way round."

Dudes, how about instead of chiding women to dress modestly, we just stop complaining and combat the vices we face through greater devotion to the BVM. In this way, we will strive to treat women with greater chivalry and respect out of our devotion to her--and it will become all the easier to refrain from sins of impure thought when our pious efforts are bolstered by our Lady's efficacious intercession.

In short, if we simply face facts about the challenges of living in the modern world and address them in a godly way, then in doing so we will fortify our souls and gain ground along our individual roads to Heaven.

Because they won't react to that.    LOL
