I hope this thread won't turn into a debate... I am just wondering about the wording of something I read about modesty.

I read that

"A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees.  Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper." (The Cardinal Vicar of  Pius XII)

My question is, how much exactly is "two finger breadth.." ? On this website it says "two inches", but is that what is meant? http://cora.dashjr.org/trad/modesty.html#chap3

Then the website also talks about sleeves needing to be long or quarter length. Are short sleeves ever allowed, like in the summer? I dont mean for Mass but just casually. I am also not referring to showing the shoulders.

Also, I'm not very clear on this quote regarding the length of a skirt or a dress. I get that it should be below the knee. But how much below it? right below the knee, or to the ankle?

I'm just wondering about the quote!

thanks Smile

Just so you know, this thread will turn into a debate.  The excerpt you've referred to is very controversial and there's as many different opinions about what constitutes modest clothing for women as there are people.

It WILL turn into a debate, as fluffy says. FE has one about the Siri letter every few months, if not more.

I should write an article for TiA on why bodices and beer are an integral part of traditional culture.

oh no...  ;D  but actually I hope that it won't be a debate. I am only wondering what the quote means. If anyone disagrees with it, - then you disagree. But I would like to know Smile thanks!

The passage proposes that necklines for women should be "two fingers-breadth" below the collar bone at maximum.  This is the width of two fingers, or about an inch for most people, less for daintier fingered girls.  The passage also proposes that sleeves should extend down at the very least to just past the elbow, or 3 quarters down the length of the arm.

Does that help?

FYI... this passage originally came from instructions regarding school girl uniforms, from what I understand.  Some traditional catholics feel that it should be universally followed, as in, at all times.  Some feel that it should be followed for all women at Mass as well as at school.  From what I can tell, the majority of trads, at least on fe, think it's a strict standard that only applied to the school uniforms it was written about.

I've also seen many revisions of these instructions, perhaps made so that the standard is less strict, thus more likely to be universally accepted.  This is where you're getting the "two inches" from.

Any chance of this not being a debate disappeared when HK posted that picture.
