I would be interested to hear people's views of what this Archbishop is like ...

What are your views?  How supportive of Tradition is he? Will a letter like this have any useful effects? What else does he stand for?

Hearing from anyone in New York would be interesting indeed. But any American's views would interest me (as an American living overseas). He is after all  the man appointed to the leading most important diocese in America.

What does he mean for American Catholicism at this point?

He really dropped the ball on gay marriage in New York. He did not combat it hard enough and he's admitted it. I think this ended up being a wake-up call for him and he has since been out and front combating gay marriage.

With regards to tradition it's my understanding that he has restored the faculties of at least one traditional priest who had his faculties arbitrarily removed by Cardinal Eagan.

I have also heard that Dolan is walking on eggshells to a degree as Cardinal Eagan is still alive and able to vote in any papal conclaves until he turns 80.
Michael Voris was his (Dolan's) wake-up call 1 year ago and ever since Voris called him out, Bp. Dolan started to change his tune.

"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Could I produce a witness more trustworthy than the Son of God?"  St. John Chrysostom Sunday Homily

Unfortunately, I have seen +Dolan happily supporting very charismatic groups and events when he was archbishop of Milwaukee.  It is possible that he's changed his stance since then.  This was about 2-3 years ago.  He is undoubtedly one of America's most vocal socially conservative bishops.

Good on the archbishop for calling Obama out on this.  I couldn't finish the article, however.  It was giving me a headache.

If Dolan actually cares about what Voris has to say that's a very good sign.
