"By Dr. Mercola

In a scandal that has reverberated around the world of cancer research, the Office of Research Integrity at the U.S. Department of Health found that a Boston University cancer scientist fabricated his findings. His work was published in two journals in 2009, and he’s been ordered to retract them. But important studies by other scientists like those at the Mayo Clinic, who based their work on his findings, could now make 10 years of their studies worthless, according to commentary in Gaia Health.

It seems fairly evident that the cancer industrial complex is a highly lucrative, well-oiled system that tends to support funding for expensive drug treatments that don't address the cause of the problem, and have yet to make a significant dent in the decrease of the overall cancer rate in the US despite investing hundreds of billions of dollars. Much of the support comes from flawed and biased "research" studies that support the use of expensive drugs as detailed in the featured articles.

Researchers, too, are well aware of the notoriety and money to be found in cancer research … particularly what may be deemed successful cancer research (which unfortunately is often measured by the discovery of new drug treatments). But, as with many areas of medical research, it's important to read between the lines of "scientifically proven" studies, even those that are well accepted.

Often what you'll find is the research gives the perception of science when really it is a heavily manipulated process designed to control and deceive. Case in point, here again we have an example of widely accepted, published research that turned out to be fabricated"

But...but...but scientists always tell the truth!

Don't they?

I looked into this.  I think it has to do with the body's acid/alkaline balance.  There is a theory that cancer rates are soaring because the modern diet leads to an acidic system, which in turn leads to inflammation.  Cancer can be thought of as inflammation gone nuts.  In theory, adding small amounts of baking soda to your water will keep your system and blood more alkaline, and reduce swelling.  It is found to reduce swelling in the gut, which is part of why it helps with things like heartburn and diarrhea.

Here's an interesting tidbit... some of the more successful cancer drugs on the market have baking soda in them as part of their "inert" ingredients.  Is it possible that they're more effective because of the baking soda and it has nothing to do with what they consider the active ingredient?

There is a theory that cancer rates are soaring because the modern diet leads to an acidic system, which in turn leads to inflammation.  Cancer can be thought of as inflammation gone nuts.

No, inflammation gone nuts causes arterial problems, heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimers. It is due to high blood glucose and insulin levels, not alkalinity. High blood glucose and insulin levels both increase cytokine levels (i.e., measures of systemic inflammation in the blood stream)  which causes plaque formation. They also cause high triglycerides and cholesterol levels, ironically, not fat intake in the diet.

On the other hand, cancer cells have 3 to 4 times as many insulin receptors on their surface as regular cells. A diet high in simple carbs and sugars causes high insulin levels in the blood stream. The insulin causes the higher growth rates of preexisting cancer cells. We have just as many cancer cells as ever, but our body's immune systems just can't keep up with them because our diets cause too much circulating insulin which cause these cancer cells to grow much faster.

Quick summary: humans don't process carbs well. Modern agriculture is a very late development in human history. We're great at processing the stuff humans ate before agriculture, like lots of animal proteins and fats, veggies, fruits, nuts, dairy, etc.

But large amounts of simple carbs - wheat flour, processed starches and sugars - are very hard for humans to process, and all cause glucose spikes in the bloodstream. Glucose spikes cause insulin spikes. Long term high insulin levels and high blood sugar cause inflammation in the blood stream, which in turn cause most of our modern diseases, like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes associated kidney, eye and nerve damage, and Alzheimers.

So you need to lower your systemic inflammation levels by lowering your blood sugars and insulin levels. You do that by avoiding processed wheat flour and corn starch/syrup, all simple sugars, potatoes, rice, breads, sweets, etc, and increase protein and fat intake.

You also might be able to lower inflammation by supplements. Resveratrol and quercetin have a lot of solid evidence as decreasing circulating cytokine levels including tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6, which are implicated in the inflammation behind diabetes and heart disease. Vitamin D is also very important in the body's response to stress, and the immune response, and diabetes and heart disease, and most Americans are chronically low due to the ridiculous sun/skin cancer scare of the last several decades (i.e., fear of sun exposure causing skin cancer has caused an epidemic of Vitamin D deficiency and far greater morbidity and mortality than anything chronic sun exposure could cause.)

Recent research also suggests that periodic fasting is one of the best ways to control inflammation in the blood stream. Something about skipping eating for 24 hours really knocks down inflammation/cytokine levels, and causes a surge in human growth hormone.

High blood insulin levels also cause the kidneys to retain sodium, increasing blood pressure, so a low carb diet is also good for hypertension.

Another observation: if high carb diets, i.e., government recommended diets based primarily on grains, cause increased inflammation, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimers, cancer etc, why do governments keep recommending them?

Because governments have stopped believing in God's Providence, and instead believe the State is responsible for each of its dependent citizens. And they see each mouth to feed as a liability, because the State must fill it, as in the eyes of the State there is no God and thus no Divine Providence to provide for the people.

And animal proteins and fats are much more labor, energy, and $$$ intensive calories to produce than those from grains such as wheat and corn, and the latter calories have a much higher profit margin for ADM and Monsanto.

So the State convinces its citizens that empty carb calories from grains are actually better for its citizens than the animal proteins and fats all of us intuitively suspect really are better for us, even while all around us we see the epidemic of diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimers and cancer the carb diet has spawned.

All because of a fear of overpopulation and an inability to feed that population, which comes from the State's atheistic view of man.

Your words are like poetry. I just got back from a WIC training bit at my work, and they are promoting the MyPlate crap. Here are some good critiques below. But I guess if we keep doing the same thing, maybe shift the language a bit, these diseases will magically go away. Oh, and my doctor gives me crap about my low carb diet and my blood work. Here come the statins and the $$$ for the death industry!

Excellent source of information. Where can find more information on this topic?

I found this book at my local library, its a good place to start:

Good Calories, Bad Calories: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control, and Disease

Quote
In this groundbreaking book, the result of seven years of research in every science connected with the impact of nutrition on health, award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet with more and more people acting on this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues persuasively that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar, easily digested starches) and sugars–via their dramatic and longterm effects on insulin, the hormone that regulates fat accumulation–and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. There are good calories, and bad ones.

Good Calories
These are from foods without easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. These foods can be eaten without restraint.
Meat, fish, fowl, cheese, eggs, butter, and non-starchy vegetables.

Bad Calories
These are from foods that stimulate excessive insulin secretion and so make us fat and increase our risk of chronic disease—all refined and easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. The key is not how much vitamins and minerals they contain, but how quickly they are digested. (So apple juice or even green vegetable juices are not necessarily any healthier than soda.)
Bread and other baked goods, potatoes, yams, rice, pasta, cereal grains, corn, sugar (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup), ice cream, candy, soft drinks, fruit juices, bananas and other tropical fruits, and beer.

Taubes traces how the common assumption that carbohydrates are fattening was abandoned in the 1960s when fat and cholesterol were blamed for heart disease and then –wrongly–were seen as the causes of a host of other maladies, including cancer. He shows us how these unproven hypotheses were emphatically embraced by authorities in nutrition, public health, and clinical medicine, in spite of how well-conceived clinical trials have consistently refuted them. He also documents the dietary trials of carbohydrate-restriction, which consistently show that the fewer carbohydrates we consume, the leaner we will be.

With precise references to the most significant existing clinical studies, he convinces us that there is no compelling scientific evidence demonstrating that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease, that salt causes high blood pressure, and that fiber is a necessary part of a healthy diet. Based on the evidence that does exist, he leads us to conclude that the only healthy way to lose weight and remain lean is to eat fewer carbohydrates or to change the type of the carbohydrates we do eat, and, for some of us, perhaps to eat virtually none at all.

The 11 Critical Conclusions of Good Calories, Bad Calories:

1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, does not cause heart disease.
2. Carbohydrates do, because of their effect on the hormone insulin. The more easily-digestible and refined the carbohydrates and the more fructose they contain, the greater the effect on our health, weight, and well-being.
3. Sugars—sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup specifically—are particularly harmful. The glucose in these sugars raises insulin levels; the fructose they contain overloads the liver.
4. Refined carbohydrates, starches, and sugars are also the most likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and the other common chronic diseases of modern times.
5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating and not sedentary behavior.
6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter any more than it causes a child to grow taller.
7. Exercise does not make us lose excess fat; it makes us hungry.
8. We get fat because of an imbalance—a disequilibrium—in the hormonal regulation of fat tissue and fat metabolism. More fat is stored in the fat tissue than is mobilized and used for fuel. We become leaner when the hormonal regulation of the fat tissue reverses this imbalance.
9. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels are elevated, we stockpile calories as fat. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from our fat tissue and burn it for fuel.
10. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbohydrates make us fat and ultimately cause obesity. By driving fat accumulation, carbohydrates also increase hunger and decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism and physical activity.
11. The fewer carbohydrates we eat, the leaner we will be.

Good Calories, Bad Calories is a tour de force of scientific investigation–certain to redefine the ongoing debate about the foods we eat and their effects on our health.
