I bought this last weekend, in .22, since we're talking about .22's. But I think I am going to trade it in and just get a Ruger 10/22 and a Mosin Nagant.

As a freshly minted 2nd Lt I once had to ready an arms room with 400 M-16s, 3 M-60s, some mortars and the Co's 1911 for an inspection. To this day the smell of GI bore cleaner and black plastic makes me nauseous. Puke

Over half "my" M-16s were yellow tagged (unshootable and needing repairs at the depot level)  The CO's 1911 rang like a cow bell it was so worn. The M-60s & mortars were usable
FWIW Jet A smells a lot better than GI bore cleaner:

I was thinking about getting a 1911 in .45acp, sounds like the CO didn't take very good care of his sidearm. I've never seen an M60 or mortar, as I have never been in the military, but I can imagine they are pretty cool. I would like to get my hands on a m240 bravo just to see how long I could hold it up in my arms without having them fall off, lol.

The 1911 is a very fine pistol. The one issued to my CO had gone through three wars and several rebuilds. It was just plumb worn out. We went to the M9s shortly after (not my cup of tea)  I spent a very short time as a LAWS instructor---now those are fun! The M2s are even funner.
Get a job as an avalanche tech with the Ski Patrol and play with 105 Howitzers & boo bombs this winter (if the 105s haven't all been replaced with something newer by now---avalanche 105s were blowing up a bit too often a few years back, plus they had burned through all the korean war vintage shells)

Why on earth are you interested in all this stuff anyway? It's of very little practical use outside the millitary and police (or avalanche control.)
Hunting, wilderness survival, competative shooting and self defense skills are far more useful and fun to learn IMHO.
