I completely agree with On the Waterfront, one of the best films of any decade.
But Some Like it Hot was condemned by the Catholic legion of decency.

I completely agree with On the Waterfront, one of the best films of any decade.

Favorite scene: A true act of brotherly love where the lawyer brother gives his brother a gun and helps him as a final act before Friendly has him killed. I think the "I could have been a contender" line got to him.

The only Best Films of All Time list worth reading is the BFI Sight & Sound Critic's Poll, conducted every ten years.

Top 21 from BFI's most recent list (including years the films were released) from 2002:

1. Citizen Kane - 1941
2. Vertigo - 1958
3. La Régle du jeu - 1939
4. The Godfather and The Godfather Part II – 1972 and 1974
5. Tokyo Story - 1953
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey - 1968
7. Battleship Potemkin  - 1925
7. Sunrise - 1927
9. 8½ - 1963
10. Singin’ in the Rain - 1952
11. Seven Samurai - 1954
11. The Searchers - 1956
13. Rashomon - 1950
14. The Passion of Joan of Arc - 1928
15. A bout de souffle - 1960
15. L’Atalante - 1934
15. The General - 1926
15. Touch of Evil -1958
19. Au hasard Balthazar -1966
19. Jules et Jim - 1962

Total of 7 films from the 1950s here as well, but the only points of convergence for this list and the AFI are Singin' in the Rain and The Searchers.

Any 1950's films you enjoy (besides Vertigo)?

Sure - from the list, I love Touch of Evil, Rashomon and The Searchers.  Outside the list, a couple other favorites are The Night of the Hunter and Sweet Smell of Success.
