I don't know about sown up. Their are still questions surrounding Smith.
Everybody keeps saying that. Well, he hasn't exactly been a great QB. He made an unexpected improvement this year (which was sort of a microcosm for SF in general), but he has a long way to go to catch up to the sort of level that your usual Super Bowl winning QB generally plays at.

Eli didn't really have that kind of year either. Or Dilfer. DEFENSE. Two things will win you a superbowl: defense, and a quarterback who doesn't make mistakes for one game. If you get to the superbowl and have those two things, you'll never lose. Ever.

LOL. yeah, what i mean is that IF you get to the game, those two things will guarantee you a win. Sometimes you can even get by with just one of them. But put together and you're a champ.

But Eli still played at a higher level than Smith last season, even if he wasn't as big of a factor during the actual Super Bowl. Dilfer is an anomaly that you often hear cited as evidence that you can win a Super Bowl with a mediocre or sub-par QB. You hear it a lot because it's just about the only piece of evidence that one has to argue such. My point is simply this: Smith improved this year, but he'll have to improve again for the Niners to reach the Super Bowl.

Well, Matt Hassleback won a superbowl and he wasn't elite by any means, he's barely better than Dilfer if that. Brad Johnson, too. And don't forget Doug Williams back in the 80's. It's not common, but it's more than an anamoly I think.

Hasselbeck was a very good QB for a number of seasons. He was much better than Smith has been. I'll give you the other two, but we're still talking maybe 3 mediocre QBs winning Super Bowls in the past 30 years or so. It's definitely a rarity, and SF winning with Smith in his current form is just as rare, especially given the number of teams in the NFC that can put up 50 points in a game.

Not many teams could put up 50 against our defense. Also, if one considers that Smith will finally have stability in his offensive coordinator and head coach, he can only get better.

That's true, but a lot of teams put up over 20, something which Smith can't always do. On the other hand, he can't put up enough points against tough defenses either, as we saw when they fell to the Giants. I'm not some big Smith detractor, but he was one season away from being cut. I'm not placing bets on a Niners dynasty after one average season from Smith. It's possible that they'll win a championship but only time will tell.

I hear you, and I am not an Alex Smith believer, but, you have to admit, if Kyle Williams runs away from that punt, they reach the Super Bowl.
