Makes one wonder why 50000 marriages a year are declared null to begin with....
I

Maybe they weren't Sacramental marriages  Huh?
I mean with the social state these days (decades) would it be a big surprise if many marriages were not sacramental?

I was just thinking of the attitude of "If it doesn't work out we'll just get divorced"  no view of permanence
Divorced people marrying. Ligamen.
"Non practicing Catholics" getting married by JP then divorcing.  Lack of Form

I can see a lot of "annulments" in the "nonCatholic" "not-practicing-Catholic" circles
Evidently the Church knows something that we don't about those null marriages....

"Nothing is more miserable than those people who never failed to attack their own salvation. When there was need to observe the Law, they trampled it under foot. Now that the Law has ceased to bind, they obstinately strive to observe it. What could be more pitiable that those who provoke God not only by transgressing the Law but also by keeping it? But at any rate the Jews say that they, too, adore God. God forbid that I say that. No Jew adores God! Who say so? The Son of God say so. For he said: "If you were to know my Father, you would also know me. But you neither know me nor do you know my Father". Could I produce a witness more trustworthy than the Son of God?"  St. John Chrysostom Sunday Homily

Provided both parties were free to marry,

With so many divorced people re-marrying again, I would think there are many instances where both parties were not free to marry.
Which was half my point.
There must a lot of these circumstances.

I would think so if we are not privy to the documents.

Just to be clear - when you say 'annulments', do you just mean annulments?  Or are you also covering within that things like declarations of nullity in the modern era?  For example, Catholic man marries non-Catholic woman in a registry office.  The marriage is never celebrated in the Church.  Later, they separate and get a civil divorce.  The Catholic man then wants to get married in the Church to another woman.

In the new era, the original 'marriage' would be declared invalid (I understand for 'lack of form').  So, the man would be free to marry in the church.

I don't know if that's how it has always been (?), but is that something you would object to?
