I have realized that on numerous occasions, I forgot to mention the number of times I sinned in Confession, and just said the sins... (I don't remember them all now). I'll mention this in my next Confession and maybe say again what the sins were and estimate the number of times. But I'm just wondering, did this make my Confessions invalid?

No! Once we've done our best to examine our conscience and confess, and have been absolved, and have done our penance, all our sins are forgiven, even mortal ones we forgot to confess. If we later remember a mortal sin, we should confess it at the next confession. But if we forget again, the same applies.

A good practice is to regularly ask God to show you whether there is anything that you need to confess in your next Confession that you cannot recall.

I keep a notebook of my nightly examens, and use that to prep for confession.

I keep a notebook of my nightly examens, and use that to prep for confession. That's a good idea. Not just for use in the confessional, but in keeping track of our "sin trends". I think I will start doing that. I could see it being very useful in identifying what kind of temptations and sins cause me the most grief, in turn helping me to be more on guard against them. Thankyou, per_passionem!

No, I wouldn't have time to count each consented to venial sin through the day. Just once a day. I start by praying to the Blessed Virgin for the graces to make a good examens, and for light that I may see my sins, contrition that I might be truly sorry, a firm resolution and spirit of amendment, and hope that I might not fall into despair or presumption. Then I do the examens, record in the notebook, say the act of contrition, offer penance, and then the night before confession, sum it up using the notes. This saves a lot of time in confession, and that means I don't have to scruple about going very regularly. I don't think it's possible to count the number of these types of sins, only the duration. For example 'almost all day', or 'a whole hour', etc. If you keep the notes, you'll see the trend, and you're bound to see improvement. I also confess my temptations, if they're worrisome. It doesn't take any more time if you have the notes, and just say it matter-of-factly. Thanks for the nice comments!

Thankyou, per_passionem! Yes, that could certainly be an aid spiritually but it might best be utilized while under spiritual direction. We are only required to confess the number of times mortal sins are committed. Keeping track of all our venial sins might be... discouraging. For me at least. lol.

I can't remember where I read this, but a saint said that our souls are more unique than our fingerprints or faces. So, do what works.
