I did  an independent study in college on Les Miserables... it was for my french major, which I use oh=so=much as a stay at home mom now....  but anyway, my husband summed up that entire literary work in 9 words...... he stole some bread to feed his sisters kid....

I found it as about as pretentious as french cuisine!  LOL

Ok, I expect to be drawn and quartered for saying this but last night finally, for the first time ever, I watched The Blues Brothers. In fact, it was the extended version with about 15 extra minutes. That movie is probably the worst one I have ever had to endure. So it is my #1 candidate for a classical movie whose popularity I just cannot "get".

I would have to agree. The Blues Brothers were mildly funny at times, but not nearly as funny as Belushi and Aykroyd could be in other roles. And musically, they were average at best. Yes, the band was first-rate, and Belushi was a talented mimic, but the original singers (of the songs the Blues Brothers were covering) were so much better that I couldn't even listen to Belushi's pale (pun intended) imitations.

Somebody keeps recommending a film which sounds like a similar premise to Blues Borthers to me, it had Samuel L Jackson and the late, great, Bernie Mac (not Catholic but very funny and predominantly clean humour too) but I forget what it was called. Soul was in the title I think.

All that we are is a picture in a mirror, with fancy shoes to grace our feet. All that there is, is a slow road to freedom; Heaven above and the devil beneath. We're all in this thing together, walking a line between faith and fear, this life won't last forever - when you cry I taste the salt in your tears.

Citizen Kane. I found it boring.

Spooky, I read through all the posts before I posted on Citizen Kane. I wholeheartedly agree with you. In fact I am underwhelmed by most of Orson Wells's films. "Boring," is exactly how I would describe that movie!!!

Cheerleader I just can't get into It's A Wonderful Life, maybe because Jimmy Stewart is not my favourite actor.
My favourite movies are A Man For All seasons with Paul Scofield as St.Thomas More,Doctor Zchivago, Song of Bernadette about St.Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes, and many others. I like the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wllder. The one with Johnny Depp made me think he was channeling Michael Jackson, almost a parody of Jackson and all the stuff with him and the kids.
I love A Christmas Story, that's my favourite Christmas movie  with Ralphie and the leg lamp his dad,Darren Mcgavin gets as some sort of gift or prize.

Need I say more?

How could you not like a movie in which Donald Duck and Daffy Duck appear in the same scene?  Ah yes, classic scene indeed.

But then, doctors tend to love ducks.  Ponder that one, it will hit you eventually.   Tip o' the hat

Off hand, I can't think of a single movie that I don't 'get'.  There are plenty of movies out there that are supposed to be classics that I don't like, but I do still 'get' why people are hung up over them.  I think that is a distinction worth making.
