I have a question in moral theology. I am pretty sure that it is wrong to say something like: "I can't tell you what I know about Mr. X, it would wreck his reputation." Even though the speaker does not identify specifics it is true to say that the speaker in fact has just defamed Mr. X, correct? What I am looking for is some specific discussion of how this is handled in moral theology texts? Thanks for any help.

While I don't know about a moral theology handbook, it seems to me that it would be better to tell the other person and let them draw their own conclusion.  And that's only if something needs to be said.

If, for example, your friend is about to start dating Mr. X, yet your father fired him for theft -- well, it might be the most charitable thing to tell your friend not to date Mr. X.  And to provide the reason why.

Thanks OCLF, I appreciate the effort. I'm pretty sure it's called backbiting and I need to argue against it but I lack the specifics from a moral theology text.

It would be a form of detraction. You can see the CE entry for detraction for more details: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04757a.htm

Once priest told me to say "I don't know," that it would be a justified broad mental reservation since it's none of the person's business.

That seems like a lie to me.  You do know.

Call Fr. Y. It would be "I don't know for you." But mental reservation on the last part.

Also, when someone asks "how was your day," do we really have to tell them exactly how we are doing? I almost always say fine or good. It's fine or good for those asking, since they are not entitled to know every single detail.

Ahhh, I see.  That's not how I operate -- I tend to give a direct answer to a direct question.  Or else I will say that I don't wish to discuss it.  Or I will ask why they need to know.

That's more of a socially accepted, stock answer sort of thing.  Ironically, in Russia the answer would be, "not too bad."  Saying you are "good" makes it sound like you're bragging about your awesome life.
