things are wrong not because they offend God or are contrary to church teaching, but because they, in one way or another, inhibit the "happiness of the individual" . . .
That's basically what St. Thomas said as well.

That's basically what St. Thomas said as well. St Thomas knew that the happiness of the individual was fulfilled in God.

It's pretty clear that the bishops aren't supporting "religious liberty" out of a principled belief that all religions are equal or are worthy of respect by the state. I doubt they'd care if the Buddhists were having their religious liberty taken away. Rather, they are arguing for the liberty of the Church by appealing to the only law which all Americans recognize: the Constitution.
And yet any time the Buddhists or any other pagan or infidel cult thinks it's threatened the USCCB is right there beside them, filing an amicus curiae brief defending 'religious freedom'.

Because a legal precedent that inhibits Buddhists' free exercise also affects Catholics. For better or worse--actually, surely for worse--we live under a government that treats--or at least tries to treat--all religions equally. This isn't going to change until we have a Catholic (super-)majority. Until we get that Catholic (super-)majority, we would do best to support the freedom of the Church under the existing system, even if that means working for freedom for other religions as well.

And I'll tell you something else, when we had to go to the diocesan required marriage retreat ( I swear if I have kids they're getting married through sspx if things don't change) they spent the livelong day about why you shouldn't use contraception... it gives you cancer, it gives you aids, it gives you cancer, it gives you cancer (which, btw-- is based on correlative evidence, not causative evidence) AND, you shouldn't use contraception because "NFP is better." Not once was contraception said to be sinful or even a mortal sin. The newchurch teaches that things are wrong not because they offend God or are contrary to church teaching, but because they, in one way or another, inhibit the "happiness of the individual" or "impede upon quality of life." The newchurch has it's mission to make sure everyone is comfortable on earth while they follow flexible arbitrary rules. I'm gonna stop before I start using foul language.
Exactly. I suspect much of this comes from Humanae Vitae, which focusing on the social ills of birthcontrol rather than its objectively disordered nature. A forum member here sent me a really good article on this. If you're interested, I will send it to you.

Not often you see trads wishing that Paul VI had been more modern!

Not often you see trads wishing that Paul VI had been more modern! I'm not sure how consequentialist arguments for the immorality of a particular act are particularly pre-modern.
