Just curious - does your church have a catafalque which they use for All Souls' Day, or perhaps requiem masses? If so, do you know how it was constructed, i.e., what types of materials, plans, etc.? Or was it obtained from somewhere else? What trappings are essential and which are, well, accidental? Any info would be helpful.

Yes. Though you can be creative in terms of simple cheap light substitutes for a real oak coffin. Since its going to be covered anyway.

Which is what I'm looking for - a cheap light substitute. I was wondering if anyone had practical suggestions for a substitute, since our chapel is a bit strapped for cash.

Our apostolate used old books and then covered it with a black cloth. It did the job.

A Novus Ordo table-altar also works well. (Might as well put it to good use).

Anything that is generally shaped like a coffin will work. As others have noted, it will be covered with the funeral pall, anyway.

I was astonished one day to discover a plywood coffin in the choir loft.  For a time I thought the congregation were planning my murder.

It later dawned on me what that must be for...
