That site was made entirely in Dreamweaver and a bit of CSS for the text formatting.

Well, mainly my question is whether you took some classes in this stuff or whether you just learned online.

See I have the content for my site almost wrapped up. What I need is to start designing, and outside of some HTML I learned while I had my blog up, I am not very knowledgable on the subject.

I've browsed through templates online, but I can not find one I like. Everything appears very modern and I would like a site that looks like an aged book (though not necessarily like the Vatican's site, where you can not read anything on it).

I want to keep in mind that at first my bandwidth might not be very large, however I have content and I think I will want something that allows for that possibility. I basically want some flexibility with the form but I am not saying I want anything like a pop-culture website.

Not sure if I am making myself clear, but basically I could go for something as basic as www.traditionalcatholic.net or as beautiful as a vintage D-R.

Well, after years of resisting computers, I finally ended up enrolling at a school for their 3 year multimedia program.

But I learned web design more or less the way I learned guitar.  I was taught a couple of chords, and then I just started making up my own chords and writing weird songs.

So, I would say try following this formula and see what happens:

1. Design a site totally in photoshop:  banner, buttons (w/ overstates), pics, text areas.  Everything.  Don't go any wider than 800 px.

2.  Slice up your photoshop image (hi/med res jpegs, sans the text areas).

3.  Open up an html editor, plop in a table (800 px wide, centered, with however many rows and collumns you think you'll need), and start dropping in the "puzzle pieces" of your site.

Just keep testing it in your browser, and keep fiddling around with it until it looks more or less like your original photoshop image.

I would also recomend employing some CSS for your text and textlinks.  There are lots of tutorials online for this.  This way, you have site-wide control over your text style and you can do some really neat things.

While I admire your ability to hand code in note pad, I would really recommend getting Dreaweaver or FrontPage or something that alows a code/design view while you're working.  It really helps.  Or, better yet, take a class.  I doubt I ever could have learned without the classes I
took.

Mostly 'cause my teachers and fellow students were geniuses!  I'm still catching up to them.

I am like the fellow above... if I can be bothered to mess with web design, I do it completely by hand in notepad. I've used a WYSIWYG editor a few times and it has seemed really "nice." The code tags are often in a nice little menu, you can watch the page as it comes together, but it just seems to be somehow "cheating." I learned how to do it in Notepad, and that has always felt most natural.

Sure, whatever works.  In web design, the end justifies the means.  I'm merely about giving my paying clients web sites they can drool over in a timely manner -and for me, that means employing certain tools (like Dreamweaver).  Time is money!

If you can get the results you desire hand-coding, by all means, go for it.  If you want a quick and slightly easier way of creating your sites, come over to the DARK SIDE and get yourself Dreamweaver MX.

I am self taught, mainly by messing around and witht he help of various manuals online. I've never bought a book, never took a class.

That's an awesome website. I made about half of my website using the stuff they taught. I probably could make the rest with it, but I really lost interest in the website right now.

Hope I don't get thrown out on my ear for posting in the men's domain

I did my website http://www.cottonbaby.ie with http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index.html - download it for free.  I also bought 'HTML for Dummies'.  I wanted Dreamweaver but couldn't afford it and now I'm glad because I might never have learned the raw html.

When I was struggling to get my head around it all I found www.webmonkey.com an excellent resource.

When I have lots of pictures and text to arrange on the page I always use tables - makes them behave themselves.

hth - and I'll tiptoe back outta here now

It is clear that some women post in this men's forum, which is a matter for the moderators. I know they mean no harm at all. However, upon seeing two posts within about five minutes of looking among the manly items, I thought it would be best to post something, as the present thread, visible to all, is about impurity and self-abuse. I have no problem with the thread. It is a serious problem among young men, and it does not hurt to address it. However, from the fact that women post here, it is easily deduced that they also somewhat freely browse, too. With the visibility of the thread about impurity on the bigger "board", if that is the right term, I thought some women, already curious about things, might unnecessarily and inadvertently be made even more curious. Anyway, cheerio! God speed.
