Vatican to Catholics:
Listen to scientists
Cardinal: Believers otherwise risk 'becoming prey to fundamentalism'

The Vatican today warned Catholics that if they do not listen to the contentions of modern science – regarding the origin of life and other issues – they risk falling prey to "fundamentalism."

Cardinal Paul Poupard made the comments at a press conference pushing a Vatican project to try to create more mutual respect between science and religion, the Associated Press reported. Poupard heads the Pontifical Council for Culture.

"We know where scientific reason can end up by itself: the atomic bomb and the possibility of cloning human beings are fruit of a reason that wants to free itself from every ethical or religious link," Poupard told reporters. "But we also know the dangers of a religion that severs its links with reason and becomes prey to fundamentalism.

"The faithful have the obligation to listen to that which secular modern science has to offer, just as we ask that knowledge of the faith be taken in consideration as an expert voice in humanity."

The Vatican project was inspired by Pope John Paul II's 1992 declaration that the church's 17th-century denunciation of Galileo was an error resulting from "tragic mutual incomprehension." .... church teaching at the time placed Earth at the center of the universe.

"The permanent lesson that the Galileo case represents pushes us to keep alive the dialogue between the various disciplines, and in particular between theology and the natural sciences, if we want to prevent similar episodes from repeating themselves in the future," Poupard said.

When asked about the debate raging between evolution and intelligent design in the United States, a papal representative reaffirmed John Paul II's 1996 assertion that evolution was "more than just a hypothesis."

Said Monsignor Gianfranco Basti, director of the Vatican project STOQ, or Science, Theology and Ontological Quest: "A hypothesis asks whether something is true or false. (Evolution) is more than a hypothesis because there is proof."

I was one year away from getting my Bachelor of science in biology and a minor in physics ( I got married and had children). There is no way that any scientist can agree to the evolutionary theory. We have more sound proof of the makeup of the atom than the evolutionary "theory" and yet they are always sure to put that "if the make up of the atom is correct then..." however all scientific experiments are begun on the belief that Darwin was bang on with his theory and they are just slow to declare it a law of nature.

Proud fundamentalist here, then!    Huummm...I wonder if the Vatican is willing to apply this logic to the "modern science" that discredits the existance of God, says homosexual parenting is just fine and dandy, abortion doesn't harm a woman, and children are fine being shoved in day cares 12 hours a day.  Oh, wait, they probably will be in a few years.

Perhaps you can explain to me how it is that certain doubts about a theory is necessarily proof of only one other possibility being the fundamentalist belief that the Bible is literal, factual and scientifically sound in describing our origins.   I have stated in the past, I respect those who belief in the creation literally based on their faith alone. I have no quarrel with those.   But to simply say that a theory of Evolution is not bullet proof by scientific standard is validation of a Unique other possibility being creation has described in the Bible is quite frankly weak minded. (I don't contend thats what you wrote)   For my part, I feel no less Catholic if I focus on the essential Truth that the biblical account reveal rather then bleeding myself into believing that the earth is 6000 year old.
