Is there an "orthodox" (as in traditional normal) way to sep up an advent wreath. do they belong more on the dining room table or on the family altar?

this reminds me of a stupid story. i went to the NO mass yesterday and  the priest skipped the penetential rite to light the advent wreath.  there is nothing in the Roman Missal about an advent wreath.

Well, if its in the "Missalette", what's the problem? Must be approved by the NCCB, right??

i don't think so

its a liturgical abuse to leave out the penetential rite and replace it with the advent wreath thing.

Sam, the N.O. is the abuse itself. Everything else is just details. What constitutes abuse of the abuse seems to be up to the individual sensitivities of the "faith community".

From EWTN's "Ask and Expert" section:

Previous Question Next Question
Jesse Tree
Question from on 11-28-2005:
Dear Brethren, On Sunday during Mass our parish priest announced after his homily that instead of the creed during the Sunday's of advent, we would be having a Jesse tree service prepared by the confirmation class in the local school. A young girl (about 11) came up to the lectern and read a very short synopsis of the first few chapters of Genesis. At 3 specific pauses other children came forward to hang symbols of: The Sun and Moon; Adam and Eve; and Noah; on a small bare tree in front of the Ambo. Afterwards the priest announced that the children had made the symbols themselves.

I can't be sure if this is in order or not but my gut feeling is that it is an illicit modification. If so what can one do about the next 3 Sundays' preparations without dissappointing the children concerned?

Yours in Christ, Colm

Answer by Rev. Mark J. Gantley, JCL on 11-28-2005:
This is not permitted within Mass, especially not to replace the creed.

I can't understand why everything needs to be added to the Mass.
