Correct. The expressions in countless books never posit hearing mass in a passive or neutral context.

Thanks to everyone for the insights. The expression has a deeper meaning than I first thought.  It is so perfectly inclusive of the faithful. Much more so than "assisting" through liturgical dance etc. It's my sincere hope that I will be able to assist at a traditional Latin Mass soon.
