I wasn't sure where to post this, so I will put here.  I am outraged, and I need advice and quick.

The nun at my children's school has told the boys that tomorrow she will be bringing in some unblessed hosts for the children to eat!

I am appalled!  She has done some quirky things this year, but this by far beats it all.  I couldn't even think straight for a few minutes.  What makes me really mad, is that it does not honor and reverence our Lord when he is present.  And to make matters worse, my boys are taking First Communion at a traditional Catholic church in May (hopefully) and I don't want them to have had anything to do with the host until that day.  It takes away the awesome privilege and honor of that day to eat it ahead of time.  Am I right in thinking this?  Or am I being too picky?

I teach at this school, so I am thinking I will have the boys come to me.  That is my lunch time, and we can sit in my room during that class.  They might be upset at first, but I will simply explain why they cannot possibly participate in this activity.  They knew there might be a glitch when they asked me as the supper table if it would be alright.  (I personally think that in their child's mind they knew it wasn't a good idea.)

Please, give me your suggestions what to say to this nun and how you would handle this.  DON'T tell me to pull my kids out - the door won't be able to hit our backsides on May 26 we'll be running so fast through it!  The decision to not return next year has already been made.

Hmm, the host, it is a wafer is it not?  In some places they sell wafers as candy, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in the early Church, didn't they consecrated unleavened bread as the host?  I guess what I'm saying is, just because something is used as a host doesn't mean it doesn't have other uses.  Don't take my word for it though, I might be wrong.  Let's see what the others have to post.

I think this is a good idea.  Hopefully there won't be too much backlash!

I will pray for you...

Is it to practice for Holy Communion?

or is it for some weird reason?

I know my mother as a Director of Religious Education does use unconsecrated hosts to teach the children in her parish third year Communion class, but I do see what you are getting at, sanctamaria. I mean for one thing too, I see that, now that you brought this issue up, doing such a type of "preparation" for Holy Communion risks giving the child the message that the Body and Blood of Christ in actual Communion is only "Bread" and "Wine." I suppose, as analogous to marriage, it would be best if one waited for that special moment. :D

I'd wait.  It would make everything seem more special, and most importantly, Holy.  If you want your children to practice just have them use neco (sp?) wafers.

when i went to meet the priest before my first communion, i don't  remember if he told me if the Host was Jesus. I also didn't have to go  to confession. Thank God the Vatican now requires a first confession  with first communion.

I made my First Communion in 1954 and I distinctly remember the Nuns giving the children an unconsecrated host for practice purposes. There is nothing at all wrong with that as far as I'm concerned.
