Vienna Catholic Cathedral Blessing for Homosexual Couples

by Hilary White

VIENNA, February 20, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A German language Catholic news site reports that the rector of Vienna’s Catholic cathedral has instituted a ceremony to bless “couples, fiancés and people in love” including homosexual partners. The cathedral, 800 year-old St. Stephan’s, is the seat of Christoph Cardinal Schonborn, the archbishop of Vienna who is widely regarded as a conservative.

Schonborn is well known around the world as a major contributor to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and for his explanations in the New York Times of the Catholic Church’s understanding of evolution.

The announcement came on St. Valentine’s Day, from Fr. Anton Faber, the rector of St. Stephan’s. Faber expressed his regret that the Church offers “relatively little” to homosexuals. Speaking to the Austrian newspaper ‘Die Presse’ Fr. Faber said, “Today there is no possibility in the Church to bless a union of people with homosexual feelings.”

Faber admitted at the Cathedral announcement that he is involved in a personal campaign among his fellow priests for acceptance of the homosexual disorder and claimed that the Cardinal had approved his proposal. His actions, he said, “are based on solid Catholic ground and are in a 100% concordance with the directives of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference.”

Faber admitted that he had received some opposition to his decision from lay Catholics. An unidentified Catholic present at the Cathedral announcement reportedly pointed out that the Church does offer homosexuals something: confession and absolution for their sins.

During the interview, the priest explicitly welcomed “people with homosexual inclinations to receive a blessing for their longing for love.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church that Cardinal Schonborn was instrumental in developing, however, defines homosexuality as an “objectively disordered” condition of unknown origin and homosexual practices as “sins gravely contrary to chastity.”

A 2003 Vatican document called on faithful Catholics to work against the societal acceptance of homosexuality. The document, from the Church’s highest doctrinal authority, said Catholics should work at “unmasking the way in which such tolerance might be exploited or used in the service of ideology; stating clearly the immoral nature of these unions; …and, above all, to avoid exposing young people to erroneous ideas about sexuality and marriage.”

The first ceremony for “people in love” came later in the day and was attended by roughly 1000 persons according to Die Presse. No comment was forthcoming from the Cardinal’s office.

Very funny!!

Given the conditions in the Church today, he would probably be excommunicated for excluding homosexuals.  Blessing of sodomites and kowtowing to Communists are not any longer offenses worthy of excommunication; the only sure way to be excommunicated is to remain Catholic.

No, Modernists and morality bashers are not excommunicated, certainly not by the "conservative" Cardinal Schönborn (who himself has too close connections to homosexualist organizations, at least that's what I understand).

The only way to stand excommunicated is when you adhere to the Roman Catholic Faith integrally and reject false principles like religious liberty (where religious tolerance should be followed), like false ecumenism (where return to the Catholic Church should be demanded and stimulated).

The homosexual subculture is virtually everywhere, even in higher ranks. You might have noticed, that the anti-gay marriage Conference in the Vatican City was given no support whatsoever by Cardinals, bishops or Papal institutions.

The "hardest" words e.g. Benedict XVI said towards gay concubinate legislation, is, that it would be a "grave error" to give them marriage rights.

Nothing more.

Likewise with abortion. Who saw excommunication for those "Catholic" monarchs who signed abortion permitting laws in the last decades? (John Paul II was silent about this, he instead convoked the Assisi 1986 "Peace Prayer" World Conference.)

Where was the Vatican support for King Baudevin of Belgium, when he temporarily was forced to abdicate in 1990, because he did not want to sign a child murder law? Nowhere.

Concerning the theological dogma of the Roman Catholic Faith the Vatican is totally absent and in error, concerning the last remnants of Roman Catholic morality, it is but a paper tiger, and sometimes itself undermining. Remember Benedict XVI calling for more rapid marriage "annulments" and shorter procedures so Catholics would obtain annulments the easy way (if it goes any easier)?

(You might as well look towards the moral situation of the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising from 1977-1982 when the renowned Council theologian Joseph Ratzinger was Archbishop there. Apart from the German Bishops' Conference issuing abortion permits to "women in need" - while only one bishop, that of Fulda, refused - the over-all collapse and relativism ruled there. So much for the "Panzerkardinal" myth created by uninformed or extremely-liberalist media.)

If only more of those naively "conservative" Catholics would come to see this reality of the crisis and not believe in the "strong orthodoxy" of "Rome". It is all an illusion. Just remember, that the primary posts are occupied by e.g. a Walter Cardinal Kasper, a man who was also an ultra-modernist German bishops.

May God protect the dear fatherland. Go on working for him... oh, you dear Savior!") - Clemens August Cardinal von Galen, his last words.
