Francis 2013-

1 Because Stephen II was elected but never consecrated (he died 3 days after his election), he is often not counted in official lists of Popes. The Vatican's official list does not include him.

2 The procedure for canonization was radically revised after Vatican II, severely weakening the role of the "Promoter of the Faith" (promotor fidei) whose job it was to challenge a candidate's canonization, to try to poke holes in any evidence for that person's canonization in order to ensure that only worthy candidates were venerated and emulated (the promotor fidei role is popularly known as "the Devil's Advocate" -- advocatus diaboli). The results of this are that between 1588 and 1978, a period of 390 years, there were 330 canonizations, but under John Paul II's 27-year reign alone, there were 483.
